How you can help the barn owl population in Scotland

A CLOSER look at one of Britain's most beautiful but secretive birds was offered during an evening walk in north east Fife. The Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) took a group to the haunts of barn owls, in danger of disappearing due to the destruction of habitat.

On farmland near Wormit, walkers learnt of the conditions favoured by barn owls and, by dissecting their "pellets, " found out what they feed on. The trip marked the first year of the Barn Owls of Lowland Scotland (BOOLS) project, set up last year to help farmers provide suitable breeding and hunting sites for the birds.

Conservation advisor for the Fife and Kinross branch of FWAG, Shirley Paterson, said, "Although land managers can provide what we may regard as ideal breeding and feeding sites, there are no guarantees the birds will seek them out. "Many great nest boxes throughout Fife have never been used."
