Environmental Health Check Prize Draw Winner

EHC Winner Dec 08 Taylor, Simon

W J B Taylor, Gables Farm - Worcestershire

A Worcestershire farmer has been selected as this quarter's winner of the FWAG Environmental Health Check prize draw. Mr Taylor has chosen oak saplings, guards and stakes (sponsored by TreesPlease) as his prize.

Gables Farm is run alongside Home farm and lies around the egde of Abberton, near Pershore in Worcestershire.  The land is gently undulating, with areas of heavy clays, causing some difficulties with this year's drilling.  Both farms formed a former MAFF demonstration farm, with Mr Taylor leading the way in the area with habitat creation and management on productive farms.   Small areas of woodland were created in awkward corners of the farm, and wet areas became a haven for waders such as snipe.   Along with this work, Mr Taylor and his son, Simon, run a successful 300 cow dairy herd, as well as a large arable enterprise.  Minimum tillage is incorporated where possible to reduce costs and improve soil organic matter.

The farm is in Entry Level Stewardship, gaining points from Management Plans, Hedgerow and ditch management, and low input grassland.
