Throughout the farming community the FWAG Silver Lapwing Awards are acknowledged as the most prestigious conservation competition promoting environmental best practice in today's commercial farming sector.     The awards for 2009 - the 30th Silver Lapwing Award - are now open for entries.

The FWAG Silver Lapwing Awards are presented to the farm that is judged to have achieved the most to encourage conservation (taken to include fauna, flora, landscape and historical interests) and demonstrates a track record of environmental best practice, integrated seamlessly into a commercially successful farming business over more than three years.

Entries are welcomed from farmers, farm managers, tenants or owners and from all types of farm enterprise including arable, livestock, mixed and forestry, regardless of size.  The first prize is £1000 and the coveted Silver Lapwing trophy to be retained for one year.  There are are two runners-up prizes of £500 and £250.

This year we are delighted to welcome our new sponsors of the Award, Waitrose, in association with Coombe Farm Organic. a Waitrose supplier and one of FWAG's commercial partners.

And the presenter of the 2009 Award will be Jimmy Doherty, farmer, NFU Farming Champion, and TV presenter of "Jimmy's Farm" and "Jimmy's Farming Heros".  Jimmy is a member of Suffolk FWAG and has received advice from the local Farm Conservation Adviser.  The Award ceremony will take place in the House of Commons in October of this year.

Many of you carry out a great deal of high quality environmental management on your farms, much of which goes unnoticed. This is your chance to shout about it and make the wider public aware of the conservation work that farmers are undertaking.  We look forward to receiving your application and to publicising the environmental achievements of the farming community as part of FWAG's 40th anniversary celebrations.

The closing date for applications is 30 May.  Please download the entry form below to make your application.  You will require Adobe Acrobat to download this file.  Alternatively contact Jane Hampson, details below, to request a copy of the form in the post.
